Description

SADAKO & THE THOUSAND PAPER CRANES (2 of 4 images)
2006-Present
Materials: Coloured square paper, matte & glossy

The work is marked "2006-Present" as it is yet to be finished. The current count is around 320+ paper cranes. I haven't been folding for a long time but once I do get to a thousand I will dedicate the entire work to my very old and frail grandma. She has formed a large part of my whole life and definitely my forever world of "inspiration" and wisdom.

Please go and read the book, it's a beautiful true story, sad and emotional and certainly reflective.

"Wings of Peace"

The paper crane
Fold the crane with love
Each crease that you stroke
Think about the world around you
Fold the crane with love
Each fold that you touch
Feel about the world around you
Fold a paper crane with love

The above poem is written by Michiko Pumpian.

About the book:

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is a non-fiction children's book written by American author Eleanor Coerr and published in 1977.

The story is of a Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki, who lived in Hiroshima at the time of the atomic bombing. She developed leukemia from the radiation and spent her time in a nursing home folding paper cranes in hope of making a thousand, which supposedly would have allowed her to make one wish, which was to live. However, she only managed to fold 644 cranes before she became too weak to fold one more, and died shortly after.

She was only two years old at the time of the event on August 6, 1945. During her time in hospital her condition progressively worsened. Around mid-October her left leg became swollen and turned purple. After her family urged her to eat something, Sadako requested tea on rice and remarked "It's good." Those were her last words. With her family around her, Sadako died on the morning of October 25, 1955.
