Description

OBESITY, ANOREXIA, PERFECTION (3 of 6 Parts)
2007
Materials: Old containers (Sorbolene, Nivea, Clearsil, Dermalogica, Listerine Mouthwash, Mount Franklin water, SPF30+ sunscreen, Lynx deodorant), make-up, red lipstick, nailpolish, plastic mask, black human hair, lip and nose masks, white form balls, teeth lollies, clear plastic, hair-band, National Breast Cancer pink ribbons, mirror, cardboard box.

This work was done part of my final Year 11 assessment mark and unit of study "the body as site". Our goal/aim was to develop an artwork or series of artworks that involves, analyses, is an observation of, or portrays the human body. The body of work was aiming to attract the audiences' attentions either through surprise, shock, humour, recogition and perspective change. I wanted to portray the human body, whether female or male, in a way which reflects how the individual, thus society as a whole, view their body, themselves and for who they are.

Whether it's their own body? their friends? other people? strangers? celebrities? gods? goddesses? heroes? Irrespective of who they are or where there from; the body as site has become more or less, an "obsession, need and/or want".

With influences of the media and advertisements portraying the body, sometimes to an extent: absurd and shocking, it is no doubt the view of our body's has become an unavoidable issue today. Associated problems include obesity, anorexia, eating disorders, body image, beauty/ugliness, health concerns/issues, fat nations and poverty. Throughout my six-part series I wanted to address these issues within my body of work and hopefully project a deep message or thought, making my audiences: stop, wonder and think.

Part 3 of 6 focuses imparticular on the media issue of "perfection". See also Part 6 of 6 for the supporting black and white collage.

Australian artist Fiona Hall and her work "7 Deadly Sins" (imparticular Gluttony) has been an inspiring influence on this body of work. Hall recently had her travelling solo retrospective exhibition "FORCE FIELD" 2008 at the MCA Sydney. I do advise you to have a good look at her work through her websites/exhibitions. She is absolutely amazing!
